BRO: Strengthening Connectivity in Border Regions

Context
The Defence Minister inaugurated 125 BRO infrastructure projects worth ₹5000 crore, marking the largest single-day launch in the organisation’s history.
What is BRO?
BRO is an executive force under the Ministry of Defence responsible for developing and maintaining strategic border infrastructure in India and in friendly foreign countries.

Aim of BRO
To fulfil the strategic requirements of the Armed Forces through timely, efficient and high-quality infrastructure development, while supporting socio-economic growth in remote border regions.
Peace-time Functions
Develop and maintain operational road infrastructure in border areas, facilitate socio-economic development in remote terrains, and undertake projects in friendly nations such as Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka.
War-time Functions
Construct and maintain roads essential for troop movement and logistics, ensure supply routes remain open through snow and landslide clearance, and perform additional government-assigned tasks during conflict.
Other Functions
Build roads, bridges and airfields in extreme climatic and high-altitude regions, use indigenous technologies like Class-70 modular bridges, support rural livelihoods through over two lakh local workers, and assist in disaster relief during floods, earthquakes and landslides.
Significance
Strengthens strategic mobility along borders with China and Pakistan, enhances economic connectivity and tourism in remote regions, contributes to India’s geopolitical outreach through infrastructure diplomacy, and plays a vital humanitarian role during natural disasters.
