Context: On September 30, 2024, the Union Minister highlighted the significant achievements of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs during the first 100 days of this government, introducing a new initiative called Jal Hi AMRIT.

Jal Hi AMRIT: Emphasis on Water Recycling and Reuse

  • The government has approved a new water management scheme, Jal Hi AMRIT, designed to encourage states and union territories to effectively manage used water treatment plants (UWTPs/STPs).
  • This program prioritizes the recycling, treatment, and reuse of water in both rural and urban settings, ensuring that the treated water meets quality standards for reuse.
  • Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and parastatal agencies are nominating treatment plants from their respective states for participation in this initiative, which aims to enhance water sustainability.

Metro Projects: Enhancing Urban Transportation
In the first 100 days, three major metro projects totaling ₹31,000 crore have been approved, aimed at improving urban connectivity and transportation infrastructure. These projects include:

  • Bengaluru Metro Phase-3
  • Thane Internal Ring Road Metro Project
  • Southward Extension of Pune Metro Rail Project

AMRUT 2.0: Infrastructure Development

  • Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, the government has sanctioned 68 projects valued at ₹3,020 crore and an additional 41 projects worth ₹3,805 crore across various states, including Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • The total value of projects inaugurated and laid for foundation under AMRUT 2.0 in the first 100 days amounts to ₹9,352 crore across 263 initiatives.

Swachh Bharat Mission & Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign 2024

  • The Swachh Bharat Mission has made remarkable progress, with 750,000 Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) registered on its portals, 86% of which have already been cleaned.
  • The Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 Campaign underscores the government’s commitment to public cleanliness and sanitation.
