Context

Escalating tensions in West Asia, marked by intensified exchanges between Iran and Israel along with involvement of a U.S.-backed coalition, have once again spotlighted Israel’s advanced, layered missile defence shield amid large-scale missile and UAV attacks.


Structure of Israel’s Air & Missile Defence Grid

Concept:
Israel has developed a comprehensive, multi-layered air-defence network aimed at neutralising aerial threats across varying distances, altitudes, and flight trajectories.
It integrates long-range ballistic interception, mid-tier missile defence, short-range rocket protection, laser-based systems, and advanced early-warning radar with centralized command-and-control mechanisms.


Core Elements of the Defence Ecosystem

Arrow Interceptor Series (Arrow-2 & Arrow-3):
A strategic long-range missile defence programme developed in partnership with the United States.
Arrow-3 performs exo-atmospheric interceptions (outside the atmosphere), while Arrow-2 engages threats within the atmosphere.
Primarily designed to counter medium- and long-range ballistic missiles.

David’s Sling System:
A mid-layer defence system targeting tactical ballistic missiles (100–200 km range), cruise missiles, and hostile aircraft.
Utilises advanced Stunner interceptors equipped with precision guidance systems.

Iron Dome Shield:
An operational short-range defence system since 2011.
Employs radar-guided Tamir interceptors to destroy rockets, mortars, and drones.
Engages only those projectiles projected to hit populated or strategic areas, enhancing cost-effectiveness.

Iron Beam Laser System:
A directed-energy weapon system declared operational in late 2025.
Uses high-powered laser technology to neutralise rockets, UAVs, and mortar shells at comparatively lower interception costs.

THAAD Integration:
The U.S.-supplied Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system strengthens Israel’s upper-tier protection by intercepting ballistic missiles during their terminal phase at high altitudes.

Airborne Interception Layer:
Israeli fighter jets and helicopters deploy air-to-air missiles to eliminate incoming drones and airborne threats, complementing ground-based defence systems.


Strategic Relevance

Layered Deterrence: The multi-tier architecture enhances interception probability against diverse threats including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drone swarms.

Security Assurance: Reduces civilian and infrastructure damage during sustained missile barrages and provides additional response time for strategic and political decision-making.
