Context

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and the Chief Minister of Assam launched Mission Senehjori, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming Assam’s exclusive Muga silk industry into a globally recognized luxury textile ecosystem.

Mission Senehjori

Understanding the Initiative

Mission Senehjori is an integrated development programme focused on strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain—from cultivation and production to branding and exports. The initiative seeks to enhance the competitiveness of Assam’s traditional silk sector while preserving its cultural and ecological heritage.

It is being implemented under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles and the Government of Assam as part of the broader vision of self-reliant growth in the Northeast.

Launch Date: June 2, 2026.

Core Objectives

  • Establish Muga silk as a premium, globally recognized luxury textile.
  • Promote sustainable production while safeguarding traditional craftsmanship.
  • Create a transparent and traceable supply chain for consumers and exporters.

Major Components of the Mission

  • Focuses on key Muga-producing districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sualkuchi, and Majuli.
  • Encourages region-specific interventions to improve productivity and quality.

Resource Regeneration and Processing Facilities

  • Plans large-scale expansion of Som and Soalu host plantations.
  • Establishes modern silk reeling facilities and a dedicated Muga spinning unit to improve processing efficiency.

Why the Mission Matters

Income Enhancement

  • Improves returns for silk farmers and weavers by integrating production with premium markets and reducing dependence on intermediaries.

Promotion of Indigenous Heritage

  • Preserves Assam’s centuries-old Muga silk tradition while creating new economic opportunities for local communities.

Boost to Rural Employment

  • Generates livelihood opportunities across farming, weaving, processing, marketing, and tourism sectors.

Strengthening India’s Luxury Textile Presence

  • Leverages the GI-tagged status of Muga silk—the world’s only naturally golden silk—to enhance India’s position in high-value international textile markets.

About Muga Silk

  • Muga silk is produced exclusively in Assam and is renowned for its natural golden sheen.
  • It is obtained from the Antheraea assamensis silkworm.
  • The silk is highly durable and becomes more lustrous with age.
  • Muga silk has been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognizing its unique regional identity and traditional production methods.

Conclusion

Mission Senehjori represents a significant step towards integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern value-chain development. By combining sustainable production, digital traceability, institutional support, and global branding, the initiative has the potential to transform Muga silk into a flagship luxury product while ensuring inclusive economic growth and preserving Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
