Sustainable Development Report 2026

Context
The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) unveiled the Sustainable Development Report 2026 during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026, assessing countries’ progress toward achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
India’s Performance in the SDG Index
Highest-Ever Position – India has secured its best-ever ranking, placing 94th among 167 countries in the 2026 SDG Index.
Overall Score – India obtained an overall score of 68.3 out of 100, improving from 99th place in 2025.
Long-Term Improvement – Since the SDGs were adopted in 2015, India has advanced 18 positions, moving from 112th to 94th, making it one of the fastest-improving large economies alongside China.
Regional Comparison – Despite this progress, India remains behind Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka within South Asia.
Progress Towards the 2030 SDG Targets
- 33.3% of India’s SDG targets are currently on track to be achieved by 2030.
- 42.7% are advancing at a slower-than-required pace.
- 24% of the targets have witnessed a decline in progress.

Infrastructure and Digital Development
India has demonstrated notable progress in:
- SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
- SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
These sectors have significantly contributed to India’s improved overall performance.
Key Challenges
Food and Nutrition Security (SDG 2 – Zero Hunger)
Undernourishment – The proportion of undernourished people increased to 12% in 2023, compared to 10.5% in 2018.
Child Malnutrition – Child wasting remains critically high at 19%, while child stunting stands at 29.3%.
Growing Obesity – Adult obesity has risen from 4.91% in 2015 to 7.27%, indicating worsening nutritional challenges.
Concerns in Climate and Governance
SDG 13 – Climate Action
- Rising dependence on fossil fuels and increased cement production have contributed to higher emissions.
- India’s per capita CO₂ emissions reached a record 2.21 tonnes.
SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
- Institutional governance indicators continue to face significant challenges.
- The Press Freedom Index score declined sharply from 59.51 (2015) to 31.96 (2026).
